Joe Cole: My World Cup Experiences and THAT Goal Against Sweden

Joe Cole is one of a select group of England players who have appeared in 3 World Cup finals tournaments. With Brazil 2014 being just a few days away he has taken time to reflect on what playing on the globes biggest stage means for a footballer. Joe says he can still vividly remember where he was when he found out he was selected for his first World Cup in 2002.

“I was in Romford with my mum and got a phone call from the FA. My mum was so proud, she was crying. It was a realisation of a dream.”

And not surprisingly his greatest World Cup memory was the amazing goal he scored against Sweden in 2006, a game that England drew 2-2.

“You don’t realise the importance of it [at the time] - it’s not often people get to score a great goal at the World Cup. I look back on all the games I’ve played and the trophies I’ve won and it is still the thing that people want to talk about.”

Brazil 2014 will be the first time in 16 years that Joe has not been selected for a World Cup, but he says he will be a keen supporter.

“I will enjoy it, and will be right behind the team. Hopefully they will do us proud – I can’t wait for it to start. My advice to the lads going out there would be to enjoy it. Take it all in, try and win it for England, and try to make an impact on the world stage”
